Help Your Self
Raise your hand if you—like me— are always on a mission to improve you life in some way.
Starting a diet?
Buying new planners or systems?
Books that promise the perfect morning routine that will change your life?
Bad-assery?
You can put your hand down now. I had mine up for all of them.
I have spent half of my life searching for someone else to tell me how to live my life, and the one thing I’ve learned is that the only expert we will ever need, is ourselves.
We can be the experts of our own lives if we could just begin to listen to what we really need.
I’ve spent the the last few days feeling as lost and scared as everyone else about the state of the world we’re living in. The answers we’re seeking right now aren’t going to be found in a book. We’re certainly not going to find it on the news. Netflix is a lovely escape, but even that can feel monotonous by day 6.
Nope, the only way you’re going to get through this and maintain any level of sanity, is by knowing what is good for you. What works. And, more importantly, what doesn’t.
Sometimes, the best way to figure out what we DO want is to simply be clear about what we DON’T want. We’re stuck at home, but that doesn’t mean it has to feel like a prison.
Learn something new.
Crochet a scarf.
Start that journal you’ve been thinking about.
Create a blog.
Zoom or FaceTime with friends.
Download a book.
Scrapbook or start a recipe book of your own.
Make a 2020 Playlist and have some fun with it.
Pray a Hail Mary or better yet, learn to say the Rosary.
Harry Potter marathon? Anyone?
Look, I know the times are tough and scary, but taking care of ourselves is essential before we can take care of anyone else. Turn the news off and go for a socially-distant walk outside. Take a nap. Drive through Starbucks and pay for the person behind you.
Apparently, baking bread is a thing now, too.
You get the picture. Be curious and open to what makes you happy. The operative word there was happy.
We will get through this, and we will be stronger people when this is all said and done.
And hopefully, you learn a little something about yourself you didn’t know before. It’s why we’re here.
Be safe. Wash your hands. Love one another. Be kind.
xo, Mo
